charliedoes paper lamps

Charliedoes, a Brooklyn designer has some beautiful handcrafted paper lamps.  The lamps graphics are applied by hand and the cuts are also done by hand.  I can alway appreciate the x-acto over the laser cutter!  These guys are perfect for an end table or a bookshelf. It looks like you will be able to purchase these on his website beginning in July.

I’ll take the whole collection. In fact, I would love to line them up around the perimeter of my bedroom on the floor (no tables needed).

What true soccer fans will watch the remaining of Euro 2008 on.  Enjoy the games!

That’s right. They’re made from recycled soccer balls.

legos fix it

“OH, I know what will fix it”, must have been what Jan Vormann said before pulling off a very fun art stunt in Bocchignano, Italy.  Jan filled decrepit walls with LEGO pieces as a part of an art project that takes art and spans it across the Sabina region of Italy.

New Bar + Club Design: Book Review

In many countries and cultures, bars and clubs are a social staple. Harkening back to the days of the “waterhole”, the purpose has pretty much stayed the course: to socialize and, more importantly, quench thirst.

In modern times, however, a third function has arisen – to become a breeding ground for panache designers’ wild ideas.  While many bare-bone bars exist to help one simply forget about the day, in the large high-culture cities around the world high-technology, cutting edge design, and trendy flair come together to create unique social experiences.

For the past several years, Abbeyville Press has been there to help document this strong sub-genre of design and architecture;  New Bar + Club Design is their latest installment.

New Bar + Club Design is a photographic journey through the worlds most popular spots of the “cocktail culture”. Though chock full of beautiful full-spread photos (for us visually oriented), there is also well-written textual descriptions and architectural plans (for when you need more “in-depth” information).  A guide for design and inspiration, or a traveling itinerary for night-lifers and bar-lovers around the world, New Bar + Club Design is a fun book to have in any library.

You can buy here. (Abbeville Press)

the cloud – organic responsive landmark

The Cloud by MIT’s Mobile Experience Lab
Located in Florence, Italy

Consisting of over 15,000 individually addressable fibers and 65km of fiber optics, The Cloud is an organic, interactive sculpture utilizing hundreds of sensors to facilitate human interaction and express context awareness.  The sculpture “feels” touch and presence along with changing environmental conditions and it’s programming responds accordingly.

The cloud is capable of detecting presence and engaging with users through its multi-fiber touch interface. Tactile engagement with the individual fibers provokes a variety of responses from the cloud, ranging from ambient lighting to animation and sound. (from the website)

The Cloud is also developed on an open-source platform to which anybody can add to its’ library of creative interaction.

soaking tub

This tub from Stone Forest caught my eye because it could fit into a bathroom that does not have room for the standard bathtub.  The vertical basin is somewhat sculptural.  This is obviously a different way of soaking; Instead of laying you lean and squat.  The plus would be that your entire body can be submerged; although, I am not sure how easy it is to relax in this position.  I must admot that this piece of stone is beautiful.  I wonder how much it weighs?

summer lounging

Spending time outdoors this summer?  Designer Patricia Urquiola has taken the traditional woven look for outdoor furniture and reinterpreted it in a contemporary style.

Her chairs make me want to curl up with a book under a shade tree and doze away the afternoons. The Pattern and texture of Patricia’s Canasta Collection is unique and the serving tables to match make the chairs that much more interesting.

one line

1 Line from DESU Design, I love it!

Plus I need it, well as much as one ever needs a spice rack.  This may be the only spice rack that I have ever loved.

cell shelf

Dear Friends, I am in love!

Cell shelf from Scandinaviandesigns could be the perfect fit for momeld’s new apartment.  I love that a shelf system capable of this size and capacity does not touch the ground, leaving you with extra floor space.  Minimal and beautiful!  I wonder how much one of these would set me back?

I wish all my books were the exact same height and width.  Too bad I stopped buying cds and dvd’s. Perhaps I could just stock up on more wii games!  Yes, that is what I’ll do!
