love what you have
People who drive the same cars for forever, a photographic collection by Matteo Ferrari. (thanks: kottke) I love the idea of this.
I would love it even more if I knew for certain that these people had never owned another car. There is something to be said for using what you have until its gone. I would like to see some life cycle analysis on keeping an old car running vs. sending it to the dump to buy a “fuel efficient” car. Which is the greener choice? The newer cars do burn fuel cleaner but they also require machining and production. With the average Hybrid only allowing 6 miles more to the gallon, you have to wonder if it’s worth the life cycle cost.

filterbrella
Filterbrella harvests, filters, and stores rainwater.
Andrew Leinonen believes in a brighter, more sustainable future. So do I. Whether Filterbrella has a place in that future isn’t for me to say, but this kind of thinking is what will get us there.
Actually, I really like the idea, but I think the shape is wrong. Instead of shaping to shed the water, invert it and focus it all to the center. Also, partnering with some action groups to hand out to homeless people seems like a great use.

designer spotlight: [umany]
Widely touted Umany Design Group simply “wants to make the world a better place” by “making objects that will make people smile, think, or just wonder it might be not that much, but it is certanly SOMETHING.”
Yes, we agree; their work is certainly a very good SOMETHING! Here’s a very small sampling:
Ta-Te-Ti: A composistion of four benches that can be assembled in different patterns.

Kisos: Flower vase designed specifically for a 3d-Printer.

Ring Clock: Independent/seperable rotating rings that together make the time.

felt for your apple
I would love any and all of these head turning cases. The Redmaloo line, from designers Katja Hettler and Jula Tullmann, has gained international praise for its laptop and iphone cases. The laptop case simply folds down and becomes an arm pad and a mouse pad.

pencils galore!
Jennifer Maestre draws inspiration from the form and function of the Sea Urchin when crafting her stunning pencil sculptures. She makes these by cutting pencils into one inch sections, drilling holes in them and then sewing them together. There must also be a good bit of sharpening involved! Beautiful Works!
